What is National Library Week?

According to the American Library Association, National Library Week is sponsored by the ALA and libraries across the country as "a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation's libraries and librarians and to promote library use and support."

This year marks the 60th anniversary of National Library Week, which will be observed Apr. 8-14 with the theme "Libraries Lead."

You can read more about the event on the ALA's National Library Week webpage.

How Do Libraries Lead?

I was a library patron long before I became a librarian, and for me, the library was always a place for me to discover new stories or facts. The library led me into new worlds and ideas. The library was always the first place I went when I needed to do a book report, presentation, or write a research paper, because I always knew the librarian would lead me to the right information I needed.

It was also the first place I ever encounter technology. Long before my family ever had a home desktop, I learned how to use a keyboard with typing software and played Oregon Trail off a floppy disk on library computers. When I was in high school, I used the library catalog to find books on King Philip's War and the Civil Rights Movement for research projects, and even created my first GeoCities Website with the help of my school librarian.

Libraries led me into the past, the present, and the future. Have they led you anywhere exciting? Or maybe ask yourself, "how do libraries help me lead?"

How Can You Celebrate National Library Week?

At the Center for Graduate Studies of Asheville
To celebrate National Library Week, the Library at the Center of Graduate Studies of Asheville will be hosting a scavenger hunt from Aug. 9th to the 16th at 9 p.m. For more information, stop by the Computer Lab or talk to your librarian in Rm. 322 at the Center for Graduate Studies of Asheville.

If you cannot participate in the physical scavenger hunt, you may participate in a different, digital scavenger hunt. Participants who submit either scavenger hunt completed and correct will be entered into a drawing for a $20 gift certificate to Tod's Tasties!

In Your Community
The easiest way to celebrate National Library Week is to visit your local library and sign up for a library card. You already have a library card for the Rudisill Library on LR's main campus--why not supplement those resources with more from your public library?

Nationwide
Follow along with National Library Week activities on social media with the hashtags #NationalLibraryWeek and #LibrariesTransform. You can also use these hashtags to show others the cool things you're doing during the week to celebrate libraries!

Enter a chance to win a $100 VISA gift card and a copy of "Firebird," the Coretta Scott King Award-winning book by Misty Copeland, 2018 National Library Week Honorary Chair, by telling people everywhere where the library led you (more information).

You can also check out the ALA website for more information on the events below:
  • Monday, April 9: State of America's Libraries Report released, including Top Ten Frequently Challenged Books of 2017.

Happy National Library Week, everyone. Don't forget to ask before hugging your librarian!
