Enjoying Library Resources at your Leisure


Last year, Rachel put together this great flyer for spring break featuring library databases that you might use to fill your leisure time. There's the NC Live's Home Grown eBook Collection filled with popular novels and award-winning short fiction and poetry as well as the Mango Languages service. Language-teaching services are generally expensive, so this is a wonderful resource available to you through the library website.


And, finally, there's Kanopy. Never heard of it? Well, listen up! This streaming service is absolutely chock full of entertaining and educational films for your viewing pleasure. It has over 30,000 documentaries, classics, and indie films (the Criterion Collection!). It also now contains the entire series of the Great Courses. The Great Courses is a series of college-level audio and video courses produced and distributed by The Teaching Company, an American company based in Chantilly, Virginia. The courses are divided into digestible individual classes and cover quite the breadth of fascinating topics.

Some of their most popular courses include:

  • How to Look At and Understand Great Art
  • Critical Business Skills
  • How to Draw
  • Wonders of the National Parks


Here are a few others that you may be interested in:

  • Science of Mindfulness
  • Sustainable Living
  • The Addictive Brain

    This is a fantastic reminder of all the great resources the library offers! The breakdown of Kanopy sounds amazing - especially with the inclusion of the Great Courses and topics like "Science of Mindfulness" and "Sustainable Living." What's in a Name?  The Lenoir-Rhyne Namesake  If you've wondered where, or from whom, Lenoir-Rhyne University got its name,  keep reading and wonder no more. Who put the "Lenoir" in Lenoir-Rhyne? His name was Walter Waightstill Lenoir. He was born on the 13th of March, 1823 in Fort Defiance, which is now in Caldwell County, North Carolina. His grandfather, William Lenoir, was a General in the Revolutionary War. Walter Lenoir graduated from The University of North Carolina in 1843. He studied law and he was the valedictorian of his class.  After graduation, he was licensed to practice in North Carolina.
