Extra! Extracurricular! - NC Live HeritageQuest

Image
Extra! Extracurricular! NC Live - HeritageQuest Authors Note: Happy Summer, my Lenoir-Rhyne University friends! It has been a full season since I last posted in our library blog and for that I extend my deepest apologies. We said goodbye to my co-librarian cohort at the beginning of spring and I have just been oh-so-busy solo-librarian-ing it up that I have neglected this blog. However, I am pledging to keep up with the blog and thus I bring to you a new post! Extra! Extracurricular! will be a new section of our blogging endeavors that focuses on resources available to you outside of LRU. (Hence the extracurricular nature.) Most resources that we highlight will be from our state library consortium, NC LIVE . If you have not checked out all the library and research goodies NC Live provides to the fine citizens and students of North Carolina, free of charge , you are totally missing out. Through NC Live you have access to ebooks, ejournals, databases, and so muc...

Farewell Sarah!

Image
Last week we said goodbye to my co-librarian Sarah Reeves. Sarah has gone on to work at a lovely company on the French Broad river where the beer flows as steady as the French Broad river...but is much cleaner and I imagine it is much tastier, too.  We miss her and we wish her all the best! Now, back to business... In the meantime, only I will be here to meet your library needs until we find a new librarian to join the LR-AVL team. If you stop in to the library area when Sarah was usually here and you don't see me, don't fret! I'm still here to help you! However, I highly suggest making an appointment with me to ensure someone is physically here to help. Still, pop-ins are welcome. Email or call to set up an appointment!  Allison Etzel email - Allison.Etzel@lr.edu phone - 828.407.4259 As always, feel free to reach out to our cohorts on the Hickory campus. They keep more regular hours and are happy to help you via phone call or email. ...

Research Hack: Boolean and/or/not Bust

Image
RESEARCH HACK:  BOOLEAN AND/OR/NOT BUST If you have conducted a search within a database, chances are you have used Boolean operators, whether you knew it or not.  Basic  Boolean operators , which are the words " and ", " or " and " not ", are used in a search inquiry to broaden or narrow your search. Using these terms in specific ways, along with key search terms for your area of study, will help you focus your search and connect various search terms to help you find exactly what you are searching. Let's break it down by each operator. AND Using the operator " AND " will narrow your search. This is because you are giving a search command that implies you only want search results that include all of your search terms together in the results. For example, you search: cat AND rapper In the diagram below, the yellow represents all the results that came back that contain both of those search terms. THINGS TO KEEP IN MIN...

Thanksgiving: 18th Century style

Image
Happy Thanksgiving, Y'all!  We've been getting into the spirit by watching the Thanksgiving playlist from  Jas. Townsend and Son  (otherwise known as our newest YouTube obsession). Watch as Jas. (short for James), cooks his way through a traditional Thanksgiving feast with recipes from America's first cookbook - Amelia Simmons' 1796  American Cookery  (or  the art of dressing viands, fish, poultry, and vegetables, and the best modes of making pastes, puffs, pies, tarts, puddings, custards, and preserves, and all kinds of cakes, from the imperial plum to plain cake: Adapted to this country, and all grades of life .) The best part is, they're all prepared in true 18th century fashion - it makes for a fascinating watch, even if you aren't inclined in the ways of cooking. Watch the playlist here   via Wikimedia

Originating in Mexico, Dia de los Muertos honors the dead with celebration rather than mourning. People visit the graves of their loved ones and set up altars for them at home. Images of calacas and calaveras (skeletons and skulls) are u...

'Tis the Season - Halloween Edition v.2 - Haunted Libraries

Image
Halloween Edition v.2 - Haunted Libraries If you had to haunt a place for the rest of eternity, I suppose a library would be a fine place to haunt...in our (librarian) opinions, that is. Did you know that the building that houses Lenoir-Rhyne University in Asheville is on a site of an old Civil War jail? We have had students report strange noises and creepy feelings when here alone late at night studying. We have not witnessed any such thing, but who knows? Maybe our little library office is haunted, too... from the movie Ghostbusters Check out this link to read Buzzfeed's list of the 10 Most Haunted Libraries in America!   Have a spooky weekend!
